Le carbonisage se pratique en soumettant les matières à traiter à l'action de bains acides (acide sulfurique en général), qui transforment la cellulose des parties végétales en hydrocellulose. Un passage des matières dans une enceinte chauffée au-dessus de 100 °C carbonise l'hydrocellulose, qui s'élimine alors très facilement par un simple battage. [...] Dans certains cas (notamment pour les tissus contenant de la rayonne d'acétate qui est détruite par l'acide sulfurique), on traite les tissus en bain de chlorure d'aluminium qui, dissocié dans l'enceinte chauffée à 130-140 °C, produit le carbonisage par libération d'acide chlorhydrique. Ce dernier mode de carbonisage confère en outre au tissu un effet d'hydrofugation d'autant plus accusé que le tissu a conservé un peu d'oléine. 2, record 2, French, - carbonisage
