CATENATION [2 records]

Record 1 2004-06-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Information Processing (Informatics)
  • Artificial Intelligence
DEF

... the operation that joins two strings in the order specified, thus forming one string whose length is equal to the sum of the lengths of the two strings. It is specified by the operator.

CONT

Appending one string to another is called concatenation (or sometimes simply catenation).

OBS

Within the general framework of files and file processing, concatenation refers to the operation of creating a collection of data by linking together several smaller collections. The resulting concatenated data set then can be processed as a single collection without relinquishing the individual identities of its components.

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement de l'information (Informatique)
  • Intelligence artificielle
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Biotechnology
DEF

The process of joining atoms together to form a chain.

CONT

Carbon has the ability to form successively two other C-atoms to form chains of varying lengths and shapes. This property of carbon is called "Catenation". Catenation is responsible for the variety and a large number of organic compounds.

OBS

Carbon shows by far the greatest tendency to catenate, forming millions of catenated molecules. Sulphur too can catenate.
