La théorie atomique a donné un fondement solide à la notion d'élément. Celui-ci est désormais identifié à l'atome considéré dans ce qu'il a de typiquement chimique, c'est-à-dire caractérisé par l'ensemble de ses électrons en nombre Z (numéro atomique) et répartis autour du noyau selon une certaine configuration. Pour le chimiste, les différents atomes ayant même configuration électronique autour de noyaux différant par le seul nombre de leurs neutrons (isotopes) appartiennent au même élément chimique : l'incidence de la composition du noyau sur les propriétés chimiques est négligeable.
