La définition du registre suivant la tessiture de la voix qu'il recouvre paraît la plus simple : registre grave, registre du medium, registre aigu. Malheureusement les dénominations anciennes compliquent les choses, quoiqu'elles contiennent des indications intéressantes sur le plan pédagogique. Les pays diffèrent dans la caractérisation verbale registrale. En Italie, la tradition se maintient en nommant le registre grave : «voce di petto» (voix de poitrine), le registre du medium : «falsetto» (fausset), et le registre aigu : «voce di testa» (voix de tête).
