La "chlorastrolite" se trouve sous forme de cailloux roulés sur les plages de l'Île Royale, et sur la rive nord du lac Supérieur. Ces cailloux proviennent du basalte amygdaloïdal (trap) de ces régions qui s'est désagrégé sous l'action des agents atmosphériques. Elle a une couleur vert opaque pommelée et est assez dure pour prendre un beau poli. Elle est parfois chatoyante. C'est un silicate hydraté d'aluminium, calcium, etc.
