L'essai consiste à déterminer la quantité de courant électrique passée au travers de carottes de béton de 95 mm de diamètre et de 50 mm d'épaisseur dont une face est immergée dans une solution de chlorure de sodium, l'autre dans une solution de soude; une différence de potentiel de 60 V est maintenue durant 6 heures. La charge totale écoulée est exprimée en coulomb et représente le coefficient de perméabilité aux ions chlore.
