A fretted stringed instrument that was very popular in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. The cittern resembled the lute but had a flat bach and 4 to 12 double courses (pairs) of metal strings, which were plucked with either the fingers or a plectrum ... Used both as a solo instrument and in ensembles, the cittern was easier to play than the lute and consequently was very popular.
