Initially these were primeval sharks (Cladoselachii) which are distinguished from present day forms by the terminal mouth opening the large eyes, small teeth, symmetrical caudal fin and the number of gills.

[Les] Prosélaciens [...] sont les Sélaciens primaires, ayant précédé Squales et Raies, apparus au Secondaire. Exemples: Cladoselachus [...] (du Dévonien supérieur au Carbonifère), qui avait des nageoires simples avec des rayons cartilagineux parallèles. Sa taille a pu atteindre 1,5 m. Il fut longtemps connu uniquement par ses dents.
