Le clarke du manganèse dans l'écorce terrestre est de l'ordre de 1 p. 1 000, celui du fer est environ 50 fois plus élevé. Si l'on prend pour ces deux métaux la même teneur d'exploitabilité, soit 30 p. 100, les clarkes de concentration correspondants dans les gisements sont respectivement 300 et 6.
