The Conserver Society of Hamilton & District Inc. started in 1969 as a group called CHOP (Clear Hamilton of Pollution). In 1984 it incorporated as Conserver Society. ... The Society now has charitable status. The [Conserver Society] helped initiate composting programs, bicycle paths, education on and reduction of pesticide use. [It also] helped limit urban sprawl and destruction of natural areas [and it] participated in regional waste-management, air quality and transportation initiatives. The Society also established an Environmental Trust, the Ed Smee Conserver Society Environmental Fund and the Environmentalist of the Year Awards [and] Dinner.
