Le principe de l'alliance clientéliste est un rapport d'interdépendance inégalitaire entre un «patron», qui maîtrise une quelconque ressource, et son ou ses «clients», à qui il redistribue la ressource en échange du maintien de sa mainmise sur cette dernière. L'intérêt pour le patron est de renforcer sa position sociale, économique ou politique, et pour le client de négocier les conditions de son inclusion dans l'accès aux ressources contrôlées par le patron.
