On utilise de l'hydroxyde de carbone, emmagasiné à bord du sous-marin et transformé en carbonate de potassium par l'adjonction d'oxygène liquide, pour enlever le gaz carbonique des gaz d'échappement et les réinjecter dans l'admission des moteurs diesels. Ce système permet aux sous-marins à propulsion diesel de rester immergés pendant trois semaines.
