A vessel in which substances are subjected to distillation or decomposition by heat and which may be made in various forms and of various materials for different uses.

In the side-ash-discharge underfeed stoker, fuel is fed from the hopper by means of a reciprocating ram to a central trough called the retort. On very small heating stokers, a screw conveys the coal from the hopper to the retort.

Souvent aussi la grille se divise en deux aires latérales inclinées, de part et d'autre d'une auge centrale; d'abord poussé dans cette auge, le combustible s'y élève, franchit les bords de l'auge et se déverse sur les grilles inclinées; dans son mouvement ascendant, il passe au niveau des orifices d'entrée d'air et pénètre dans la couche en ignition, en venant du dessous (foyers à alimentation par-dessous.)
