The term cutter is used to refer to all vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard. Cutter names are preceded with the initials USCGC, which stands for United States Coast Guard Cutter. ... The Canadian Coast Guard uses the term in similar fashion for its search and rescue vessels. These vessels range in size from around 20 meters to over 50 meters.
