Depuis le milieu des années 1980, la médiatisation et la commercialisation du sport professionnel se déploie de manière spectaculaire, tout en restant limitées aux sports les plus populaires : aux États-Unis, le basket, le base-ball, en France, le football, le cyclisme, le tennis. Les évènements sportifs et les athlètes de haut niveau sont devenus des produits que la télévision et les sponsors achètent, mettent en spectacle, vendent en vue d'en tirer un profit. Ces athlètes monnayent alors leurs talents et leurs compétitions à des prix de plus en plus élevés.
