Alors qu'hier coexistaient des standards de description de page tels que Postscript d'Adobe, Interpress de Serox, DDL (Imagen, Hewlett Packard), la tendance des normalisateurs est de proposer SPDL (Standard Page Description Language) qui s'inspire beaucoup de Postscript et d'Interpress. Si l'on veut comparer les champs d'application d'ODA avec ceux de SPDL, on doit se rendre à l'évidence : ODA concerne l'échange aveugle de documents composites (on dit aussi multicontenu), que ce soit en format final, format révisable ou les deux à la fois, tandis que SPDL ne s'attache qu'au format final. (Science et Technologie, 11.1990, 31, p. 53).
