Concentration-cell corrosion (...) occurs when anodes and cathodes form because of differences in the environment. (...) The cells formed because of differences in the environment are called concentration cells. (...) It is usually associated with stagnant conditions. The most common forms of concentration cells are oxygen cells and ion cells.
