Les gènes qui codent pour les répresseurs sont dits gènes régulateurs. De nombreux gènes régulateurs mutés, incapables de coder pour des répresseurs fonctionnels, ont été caractérisés. Les cellules qui contiennent ces gènes régulateurs inactifs produisent leurs protéines indépendamment des besoins cellulaires. Ces mutants sont appelés mutants constitutifs, les protéines ainsi produites en quantité fixe, indépendante des besoins, étant appelées protéines constitutives.
