CONTROL JOINT [4 records]

Record 1 2013-03-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Joints and Connections (Construction)
  • Placement of Concrete
DEF

An interruption of a structure specifically allowed for contraction in the time following building.

OBS

contraction joint; shrinkage joint: terms officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Joints et assemblages (Construction)
  • Mise en place du béton
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Joints and Connections (Construction)
DEF

An intentional, linear discontinuity in a structure or component, designed to form a plane of weakness where cracking can occur in response to various forces so as to minimize or eliminate cracking elsewhere in the structure.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Joints et assemblages (Construction)
DEF

Record 3 2010-05-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Masonry Practice
  • Joints and Connections (Construction)
DEF

An expansion joint in masonry to allow movement due to expansion and contraction.

CONT

Control joints can be formed by attaching a strip of wood, plastic, or metal to the form, for vertical surfaces ... or by pressing the strip into the fresh concrete on a slab.

CONT

Use of control joints faced with calking compound has also been recommended to control shrinkage cracking; however, this practice is marked by frequent failures to keep the joints sealed against leakage of rain. Steel joint reinforcement strengthens a concrete masonry wall, whereas control joint weaken it, and the calking in the joints requires considerable maintenance.

OBS

control joint: A joint in masonry.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maçonnerie
  • Joints et assemblages (Construction)
DEF
