Un changement de pente donne naissance à des régions où les contraintes de traction ou de compression vont devenir prépondérantes. Si la pente augmente vers le bas (zone concave), la vitesse de reptation augmente et tend à mettre en traction le manteau. Inversement, si la pente diminue vers le bas (zone convexe), une région de compression apparaît.
