La cricothyroïdotomie constitue l'abord trachéal en urgence de sauvetage. [...] Elle se distingue de la trachéotomie par le site d'abord; il s'agit d'inciser la membrane cricothyroïdienne et non un anneau trachéal. [...] Il existe deux techniques, la technique chirurgicale proprement dite et la technique d'insertion sur guide d'une sonde sans ballonnet après ponction de la membrane (technique de Seldinger). Cette voie d'abord est beaucoup plus diffusée dans les pays anglo-saxons qu'en France comme alternative à l'intubation en cas d'échec ou de difficulté.
