Lorsqu'ils préparent un plan bathymétrique (fichier numérique) pour la confection d'une nouvelle carte marine, les hydrographes analysent les données de profondeur, les photographies aériennes et les photographies obliques de l'estran. Par la suite, lors de la compilation des données, ils déterminent trois types de profondeurs à intégrer à la carte : les sondes critiques (dangers pour la navigation), les sondes significatives et les sondes représentatives.
