The area of a plane in a tank or vessel which is at a right angle to the direction of flow.

The cross sectional area is expressed in square feet, and used to calculate the service flow rate or the backwash flow rate. For example, a given bed may have a rate of 5 U.S. gallons per minute per square foot of ion exchange bed area.
