En Amérique, les fils conducteurs se distinguent selon leur calibre à l'aide d'un numéro de la jauge américaine (AWG - American Wire Gauge). A chaque numéro correspond un diamètre (en pouces, en millièmes carrés, en millièmes circulaires ou en millimètres carrés).
