L'apprentissage de la matière est découpé en séquences de cours et chacune d'elles renferme une "notion" à enseigner. Ce concept comprend plusieurs aspects suivant les besoins : l'aspect didactique qui correspond aux caractéristiques de la matière (objectif, notions équivalentes, notions proches); l'aspect apprentissage qui correspond à des caractéristiques sur les apprenants (population-type, motivations, intérêts); l'aspect pédagogique qui correspond à la façon d'enseigner une notion (c'est le contenu de la séquence); l'aspect interactions (définition, mots équivalents, liens entre les autres aspects).
