Une bonne efficacité de ce processus exige une densité d'environ 200 chaufferettes à l'hectare. Ces dispositifs, qui, par nuit de forte gelée, nécessitent la combustion de 200 à 400 litres de fuel par heure et par hectare, sont évidemment coûteux. Ils ont été largement utilisés tant que les prix du pétrole étaient bas. On peut apporter les calories nécessaires à la lutte contre le gel par des procédés plus coûteux à l'installation; mais beaucoup plus économiques sous l'angle énergétique, notamment grâce aux techniques d'aspersion antigel.
