La numérisation des données, base du multimédia. Dans les systèmes traditionnels, on a affaire à des signaux analogiques (vidéo, son, radio, télévision...) véhiculés sous forme d'ondes électriques. Un signal analogique est un signal continu. Il peut prendre des valeurs très diverses, mais en passant par une infinité de valeurs intermédiaires. L'informatique ne traite pas ces signaux, qui doivent donc être convertis sous forme numérique pour être exploitables par un ordinateur.
