On peut employer en soudage TIG l'un des trois arrangements suivants : courant continu-électrode négative, le plus employé, appelé également soudage en polarité directe (en anglais DCSP = direct current straight polarity); courant continu-électrode positive, rarement utilisé, appelé également soudage en polarité inverse (en anglais DCRP = direct current reverse polarity); courant alternatif, utilisé pour les alliages d'aluminium et de magnésium.

[La polarité] est dite "directe" ou négative si l'électrode est cathode (-). Elle est dite "inverse" ou positive si l'électrode est anode (+). L'anode étant (...) plus chaude que la cathode, on choisit la polarité selon que l'on désire faciliter la fusion de la pièce ou de l'électrode.
