The United States Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration is a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The birthday of the United States of America—Independence Day—is celebrated on July 4, the day the wording of the Declaration was approved by Congress.

Déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis. [...] La Déclaration d'indépendance est un texte politique par lequel les Treize Colonies britanniques d'Amérique du Nord ont fait sécession du Royaume-Uni, le 4 juillet 1776. Ce texte est marqué par l'influence de la philosophie des Lumières et tire également les conséquences de la Glorieuse Révolution de 1688 : d'après les abus constatés, les délégués des colons estiment qu'ils ont le droit et le devoir de se révolter contre la monarchie britannique (en fait, le parlement britannique qui a voté les lourds impôts et taxes frappant les colonies). Depuis, le 4 juillet est devenu la fête nationale des États-Unis : l'Independence Day (jour de l'Indépendance en anglais).
