Il arrive souvent que la corrosion cause la perte de l'élément le plus réactif de l'alliage pour n'y laisser que l'élément le moins réactif. Ce processus est communément appelé «corrosion sélective» ou «lessivage sélectif». Des termes plus précis sont employés pour nommer la perte d'un métal en particulier, par exemple «décuprification» pour la perte du cuivre et «dézincification» pour le zinc.
