DEEP SOUND CHANNEL [1 record]

Record 1 2018-11-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Acoustics (Physics)
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
DEF

A zone of minimum sound speed in the oceans that occurs at depths of approximately 1,000 metres (3,300 feet).

CONT

Between the negative gradient of the main thermocline and the positive gradient of the deep layer there is a sound speed minimum, where sound tends to be focused by refraction. The depth at which this focusing occurs is known as the deep sound channel (DSC).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Acoustique (Physique)
  • Sonar et détection sous-marine (Militaire)
DEF
