Computer programs often have prespecified values that they use unless they are given alternative values. These assumed values are called default values. Knowledge systems often store default values that are used in lieu of facts. In some cases, data directly applicable to the set of conditions for which the calculations are to be made are unavailable. Therefore, the selection of the values for these parameters may be based on more general data available from the literature or other sources.
