[The] dmft index has been used to measure the prevalence of caries activity. Teeth which were missing due to trauma or congenitally absent teeth were excluded from the data processing; therefore, they did not contribute to the final score. Missing teeth were counted only when their loss was due to caries.

The term "DMFT index," with "DMFT" in uppercase letters, is used to record permanent dentition.
