OBS

Dene Games are traditional Indian competitions. In 1992 the Arctic Winter Games International Committee recognized the lack of participation by the Yukon in many of the Arctic Sports categories, and therefore, Dene (Indian) Games were introduced to the Arctic Winter Games.

OBS

Canadian Heritage (Sport Canada) supports the Arctic Winter Games as a strategic focus event and recognizes Arctic sports and Dene games as traditional games.

OBS

While many of the sports played in the games are internationally recognized winter sports, the uniqueness of the games is in the historic Arctic sports and the Dene games that have been practised in northern circumpolar Aboriginal communities for many generations.

OBS

Another unique opportunity the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Games is the chance to produce two medal designs, one for the Canada Games events and one for the Inuit Sport and Dene Games.

OBS

Events: ... Finger Pull; Hand Games (team); Snow Snake; Stick Pull; Pole Push (team).

OBS

"Games" is capitalized when referring to specific competitions such as the Arctic Winter Games.

OBS
