In the United States Foreign Service, the place of the Head of chancery is to some extent taken by the Deputy Chief of Mission - a title (its not a rank) not known in the British Service, which does however, have Deputy High Commissioners.

En principe, les affaires politiques sont confiées à l'ambassadeur, ce dernier étant assisté éventuellement d'un ou de plusieurs diplomates au sens traditionnel du terme. Il existe évidemment des titres spéciaux. En ce qui concerne le premier collaborateur, mentionnons-en deux : le Deputy Chief of Mission dans un grand nombre d'ambassades américaines; et le Deputy High commissioner dans certains hauts-commissariats.
