The technique of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is one of the most recent products of this evolution. Briefly speaking, this approach is based on the measurement of Brownian motion of molecules.

L'imagerie de diffusion permet d'évaluer la mobilité des molécules d'eau. Cette mobilité est caractérisée par un coefficient de diffusion dépendant de la taille des molécules, de la viscosité et de la température du milieu. Dans le cas des tissus biologiques, l'existence de différents compartiments (interstitiel, intracellulaire) et la présence de membranes, influencent la diffusion et altèrent le déplacement des molécules d'eau qui devient alors partiellement aléatoire.
