One of a group of enzymes, endodeoxyribonucleases (EC 3.1.21 and 3.1.22), found in bacterial, yeast, and mammalian tissues, that catalyze the degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The enzymes are important in the repair of defective DNA, acting by catalyzing the hydrolytic cleavage of a continuous polynucleotide chain near a site of distortion.

La désoxyribonucléase I (ADN-ase I, 3.1.4.5) est une enzyme pancréatique qui hydrolyse l'ADN en oligodésoxyribonucléotides : elle rompt les liaisons esters entre l'acide phosphorique et le carbone 3' du ribose du nucléotide précédent; elle est considérée comme l'un des stimulants de la croissance et semble prendre part au mécanisme de la mitose.
