Disaster dogs are trained to search for live humans in a variety of demanding environments. These dogs are employed to search collapsed buildings and other structures in response to tornadoes, earthquakes, airplane crashes, as well as other natural and man-made disasters.

Le travail d'une «équipe maître-chien» consiste à localiser et [à] signaler précisément toutes odeurs d'êtres humains dans les décombres. Au terme de sa formation, le chien de recherche en décombres saura signaler ses découvertes en aboyant et en grattant à l'endroit où il sent une odeur humaine, même profondément ensevelie sous des gravats ou des dalles de bétons.
