Dorchester Penitentiary opened on July 14th, 1880. It is the second-oldest continuously operating corrections facility in Canada. The institution, located in the village of Dorchester, NB, is approximately 38 km east of Moncton. Prior to the opening in 1987 of the Atlantic Institution in Renous, Dorchester Penitentiary was responsible for the custody of all maximum security offenders for the entire Atlantic region. Today, the facility is classified as a medium-security Institution. Dorchester penitentiary thrives to provide offenders with progressive rehabilitative programs, with the goal of maximizing their potential to eventually reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens. 1, record 1, English, - Dorchester%20Penitentiary

Le Pénitencier de Dorchester a ouvert ses portes le 14 juillet 1880. Il occupe donc le deuxième rang des établissements correctionnels encore en exploitation les plus anciens au Canada. L'établissement, situé dans le village de Dorchester (N.-B.), se trouve à environ 38 km à l'est de Moncton. Avant l'ouverture de l'Établissement de l'Atlantique à Renous, en 1987, le Pénitencier de Dorchester était responsable de la garde de tous les délinquants dits «à sécurité maximale» de l'ensemble de la région de l'Atlantique. De nos jours, le Pénitencier est classé comme établissement à sécurité moyenne.
