Une cassure double brin (CDB) correspond à la rupture simultanée des deux brins d’ADN, à des niveaux distants de moins de 3 nucléotides environ. Elle résulte soit de l’action d’une seule particule ionisante, soit de la combinaison de deux cassures simples sur les brins complémentaires produites par deux particules distinctes. Les doubles ruptures ne sont pas nécessairement létales et certaines peuvent être réparées.
