L'appréciation du drapé d'un tissu ou d'un tricot est demeurée très subjective. Elle revêt cependant une très grande importance, car elle motive souvent l'utilisation ou le rejet de l'article. Il serait donc intéressant de substituer une méthode expérimentale à l'appréciation subjective. D'après les observations des fabricants et des utilisateurs, l'appréciation du drapé résulte de l'impression ressentie au toucher (main) et de celle donnée par l'aspect visuel du tricot, tout au moins en ce qui concerne les formes (plis) qu'il peut présenter.
