Il y a détournement de médicament dès lors que l'usager est «hors cadre» dans l'une ou plusieurs de ces dimensions : le patient/usager consomme un médicament qui ne lui a pas été prescrit personnellement, il le revend ou le cède à des proches, il vise d'autres objectifs que le soin, il ne respecte pas les doses et les rythmes des prises, il injecte un médicament dont la voie d'administration est sublinguale.
