La voie des "implants" pharmacologiques a été explorée à plusieurs reprises. L'aboutissement le plus récent, et sans doute le plus marquant, est le fait de deux chercheurs américains, qui ont implanté chez l'animal des microcapsules, des "pilules vivantes", disent-ils, de tissu synthétique poreux renfermant en l'occurrence des cellules d'îlots de Langerhans, productrices d'insuline (les animaux, des rats, avaient été rendus expérimentalement diabétiques).
