The evaluation of a suspect conducted by a trained peace officer has been developed in California and successfully implemented in many jurisdictions to combat drug impaired driving and is known as the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program. Under this program, officers go through extensive training to enable the officers to conduct various tests and to assess the suspect and determine if there is drug impairment and the nature of the drug causing it.

L'évaluation d'un suspect réalisée par un agent de la paix formé à cet effet a été élaborée en Californie et mise en application avec succès dans plusieurs administrations afin de lutter contre la conduite avec facultés affaiblies par les drogues; cette évaluation est connue sous le nom de Programme d'expert en reconnaissance de drogues. En vertu du Programme, les policiers reçoivent une formation intensive leur permettant de faire subir divers tests, d'évaluer le suspect et de déterminer si ses facultés sont affaiblies par les drogues et, le cas échéant, d'établir de quelle drogue il s'agit.
