EFFECTIVE POROSITY [3 records]

Record 1 2009-02-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

The ratio of the volume of water that a given mass of saturated rock or soil will yield by gravity to the volume of that mass. This ratio is stated as a percentage.

OBS

effective porosity: Specific yield is often called effective porosity because it represents the pore space that will surrender water to wells and so is effective in supplying water for human use. The term porosity is poorly defined and its use should be discontinued.

PHR

Specific vertical yield.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

PHR

Débit spécifique vertical.

Record 2 2000-02-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
DEF

The ratio, usually expressed in percentage, of the volume of water or other liquid which a given volume of liquid-saturated rock or soil will yield under any specified hydraulic conditions, to the total volume of soil or rock.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
DEF

Record 3 1999-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Geology
DEF

The property of a soil or rock containing interconnecting interstices expressed as a percentage of the bulk volume occupied by these spaces.

CONT

Effective, or drainable, porosity consists of pores that are well-connected by sufficiently large openings, generally greater than 0.1 micrometer in diameter.

Key term(s)
  • practical porosity
  • effective pore volume
  • usable porosity

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Géologie
DEF
