To obtain an oil film with sufficient load carrying ability between the contact surfaces, an oil with a certain minimum viscosity at the operating temperature must be used. Nowadays, the elastohydrodynamic theory makes it possible for the requisite viscosity of the oil to be calculated if the operating temperature is known.

L'élastohydrodynamique (EHD) permet de faire des études tribologiques sur des contacts dont les pressions dans le lubrifiant peuvent être très élevées (0.1 à 3G Pa) et dont l'épaisseur de lubrifiant est très faible (10nm à 1um).

Pour obtenir entre les surfaces de contact un film d'huile ayant une capacité de charge suffisante, on doit choisir un lubrifiant présentant une certaine viscosité minimale à la température de fonctionnement. La théorie élastohydrodynamique permet maintenant de calculer la viscosité exigée, à condition de connaître la température de fonctionnement.

L'EHD tient compte des déformations élastiques des matériaux et du changement de comportement rhéologique du lubrifiant dans la zone de contact. Les recherches sont menées sur les roulements, les engrenages, les contacts came-culbuteur et les transmissions à variation continue de vitesse afin d'améliorer la sûreté de fonctionnement et la durée de vie de ces mécanismes.

Epizootic haemorrhagic disease of deer is caused by an orbivirus antigenically similar to the virus of Ibaraki disease, a bluetongue-like disease of cattle. The disease is clinically similar to bluetongue in sheep and causes very heavy mortalities in deer herds.
