Les paroles que l'on emploie envers les personnes âgées peuvent sembler parfois infantiles et du fait de la diminution des capacités cognitives des personnes âgées, les proches peuvent avoir tendance à adopter le même langage employé pour communiquer avec des enfants : ce langage est appelé "elderspeak" ou "langage des aînés". Ce type de langage est caractérisé par un débit de parole lent, un volume élevé, l'utilisation de vocabulaire simplifié, des répétitions de paroles, et l'utilisation de surnoms et diminutifs.
