Le déplacement intense des électrons, entre l'électrode positive et l'électrode négative, entraîne un déplacement des molécules d'air et crée un vent appelé «vent ionique». Il est nécessaire, pour obtenir ce vent ionique, que l'électrode positive soit de très petite dimension par rapport à l'électrode négative, de telle sorte qu'il n'y ait pas équilibre entre les nuages d'ions de polarités opposées.
