De nombreux cristaux purs sont transparents aux rayonnements visibles. Pour les colorer, il suffit d'y introduire des impuretés chimiques, telles que des ions d'éléments de transition dont les niveaux quantiques excités correspondent à des fréquences optiques : ces ions forment ainsi, au sein du réseau cristallin, des imperfections qui sont autant de «centres colorés».
