ELECTROLYSIS [2 records]

Record 1 2010-04-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrochemistry
  • Electrometallurgy
DEF

The decomposition of a chemical compound brought about by the passage of an electrical current through the compound or a solution containing the compound.

CONT

Electrolysis is used extensively in metallurgical processes, such as in extracting (electrowinning) or purification (electrorefining) of metals from ores or compounds and in deposition of metals from solution (electroplating).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électrochimie
  • Électrométallurgie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrolysis (Electrokinetics)
CONT

Silver introduced into the water by electrolysis has an antiseptic action which, to be really effective, requires a very long contact time and high doses which are not well tolerated by the human body. Organic substances present in the water passivate the metal and reduce its effectiveness still more. Silver is practically inactive in relation to bacteriophages, bacilli spores, algae and fungi, which cause skin diseases. The electro-argoligenic process does not, therefore, completely protect bathers from contamination.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électrolyse (Électrocinétique)
CONT
